Every flavour page has a little cloud on it. It’s our way of showing what a flavour is like at a glance — sweet or sharp, gentle or bold, silky smooth or full of pieces — before you’ve had a taste.
The six axes
The cloud always has the same six axes, in the same order, starting at the top and going clockwise. They never move, so you can put two flavours side by side and compare them straight away.
- Sweetness — how sweet it tastes.
- Boldness — how strong the flavour is overall.
- Tanginess — tart, citrus or berry zing.
- Creaminess — creamy mouthfeel, however it’s achieved.
- Richness — how full and indulgent it feels.
- Texture — pieces, chew or crunch you can notice.
| Axis | 0 means | 5 means |
|---|---|---|
| Sweetness | not sweet | very sweet |
| Boldness | gentle | very pronounced |
| Tanginess | none | strongly tart |
| Creaminess | none | very creamy |
| Richness | light | very rich |
| Texture | smooth | lots of pieces |
The 0 to 5 scale
Each axis is rated from 0 to 5, in whole numbers. These are descriptive ratings of how much of something a flavour has — not scores for how good it is. They aren’t health ratings, sugar measurements or a satisfaction score, and a higher number isn’t better.
A texture of 0 means smooth, not poor. A tanginess of 0 just means no tang. Plenty of our flavours are 0 on an axis or two.
A worked example: Pear & Ginger
Here’s the cloud for our Pear & Ginger, which won Champion Flavoured Ice Cream or Gelato of Show at the 2026 Royal Queensland Awards.
- The biggest lobe is Creaminess, at 4 out of 5 — the circle on that axis reaches furthest from the middle, and its colour runs along the edge of that side.
- Texture is 0, which means smooth. Its circle sits wholly inside the others, so there is no Texture colour on the edge at all.
- Tanginess is 1 — there, but only just. Its small circle is hidden by its neighbours too, so it shows in the dots rather than on the edge.
- The dots beside the cloud give every number exactly; the shape gives the feel.
How the cloud is built
The cloud is six circles, one per axis, all starting from the middle. The higher the rating, the bigger the circle, and the further it reaches out along its axis. The circles are then melted together into one shape.
Here’s the same Pear & Ginger cloud with its six circles drawn in as dotted outlines:
Wherever a circle pokes out past the others, that stretch of the edge is drawn in its axis colour. So the colours around the edge tell you which axis made each bump. A circle that sits wholly inside its neighbours adds no colour at all — a flavour with no tang shows no tang colour.
A 0 is still drawn as a very small circle, so the shape never breaks apart. That makes the picture approximate at the bottom of the scale, which is why the dots beside every cloud give the exact numbers. The shape is the feel; the dots are the detail.
Our own take, and it will change
These ratings are our own estimates of how each flavour tastes, not lab measurements. They’re a starting point, and we’ll adjust them as people tell us what they think. If you reckon one is off, let us know next time you’re in.
